There are many tour companies that offer trips to the Scottish Highlands from Edinburgh, catering to a wide range of interests and timeframes. Whether you have just a day or several days to spare, these tours provide an excellent opportunity to explore the beauty and history of the Highlands. We took our one-day trip via Rabbies. The driver/host was amazing and we had a great time.
Morning: Departure from Edinburgh
Our journey commences in the heart of Scotland’s capital, Edinburgh. Boarding a comfortable coach, we bid farewell to the city’s bustling streets and head northwest toward the Highlands. The road itself offers glimpses of Scotland’s natural beauty, with rolling hills and picturesque vistas paving the way.
Loch Ness: The Search for Nessie
As we venture deeper into the Highlands, our first stop is the legendary Loch Ness, known worldwide for more than just its breathtaking scenery. Loch Ness is home to the elusive Loch Ness Monster, fondly referred to as “Nessie.” While we can’t guarantee a sighting, a boat tour on Loch Ness gives you the chance to search for this enigmatic creature while enjoying the tranquility of the loch’s dark waters. Even if Nessie remains elusive, the beauty of the loch is sure to leave you in awe.
Lunch: Fort Augustus by the Locks
We make our way to the charming village of Fort Augustus, nestled at the southern tip of Loch Ness. The Caledonian Canal runs through the village, and you can watch the impressive canal locks in action as boats make their way between Loch Ness and Loch Oich. Enjoy a leisurely lunch in one of the local eateries as you take in the peaceful ambiance of this Highland gem.
Afternoon: Glencoe and Rannoch Moor
Our journey continues through the hauntingly beautiful Glencoe, a glacial valley etched into Scotland’s history. Here, the Three Sisters mountain range stands tall, creating a dramatic backdrop that’s hard to forget. Pause for a moment to absorb the atmosphere and reflect on the historical events that have played out in this breathtaking location.
Our final stop takes us to the wide-open spaces of Rannoch Moor, a wild expanse of wetland and peat bog. As you venture across this untouched landscape, the sense of solitude and the views of misty lochs will stay with you long after you’ve left.
Evening: Return to Edinburgh
With memories of the Highlands etched into your mind, we make our way back to Edinburgh. As the sun sets behind the rolling hills, you’ll have time to reflect on the landscapes you’ve encountered, the legends you’ve explored, and the natural beauty that makes the Highlands a captivating destination.
Our thoughtful host made sure to include a delightful visit to a local farm during our Highland adventure, where we had the incredible opportunity to meet the iconic Scottish coos. Feeding these gentle giants was an unforgettable experience, and it’s a must-do if you find yourself in the Highlands. Whether you’re traveling independently or with a guided tour, booking a visit to one of these farms is an enriching experience you won’t want to miss.
This one-day journey offers a glimpse into the enchanting landscapes and mysteries of Loch Ness, the allure of Glencoe, and the untamed beauty of Rannoch Moor. While the Highlands have much more to offer, this adventure is an excellent introduction to Scotland’s remarkable natural beauty.
